How to handle engine overheating in summer traffic

Stop-and-go traffic on a hot day is the worst case for a cooling system: no airflow through the radiator, an engine idling at full operating temperature, and air conditioning adding heat on top. If the temperature needle starts climbing, what you do in the next two minutes decides whether this is a roadside top-up or a new head gasket.
The first two minutes
The needle heading past the middle of its range, a red temperature light, or a "engine hot" warning all mean the same thing: reduce the heat load now.
- Turn off the air conditioning. The A/C condenser sits in front of the radiator and dumps heat straight into it.
- Turn the cabin heater on full, fan on maximum. It feels absurd on a hot day, but the heater core is a second radiator. It will pull real heat out of the coolant.
- Stop crawling. In stop-and-go traffic, leave a gap and move in longer, slower pulls rather than constant creeping, or pull out of the queue entirely. If you can move at 30 mph or more, air through the radiator will often bring the temperature down on its own.
- Do not rev it in neutral. The old trick of revving to spin the fan faster does more harm than good on a modern car with an electric fan.
If the needle keeps climbing after all that, pull over somewhere safe, switch the engine off, and open the bonnet if you can reach the release without touching anything hot. Do not stand over the engine bay.
Never open a hot radiator cap
A cooling system at operating temperature is pressurised to around 15 psi, which puts the coolant well above its normal boiling point. Release that pressure and the whole system flashes to steam instantly, straight up at whoever is holding the cap. This is one of the most common serious burns in home mechanics and it is entirely avoidable.
Wait at least 30 minutes, and preferably until the upper radiator hose is cool enough to squeeze comfortably. If there is an overflow or expansion tank with a low-level mark, you can usually add coolant there without touching the pressurised cap at all — check your manual for which cap is which on your car.
What to check once it has cooled
Three things tell you most of the story:
- Coolant level in the expansion tank. Empty or below the minimum line points at a leak or a long-neglected top-up.
- Anything wet or crusty under the car and around the engine. Look for green, orange or pink residue on hoses, at hose clamps, around the water pump and across the front of the radiator. That colour is your coolant.
- Steam versus smoke, and the smell. White steam that disappears and smells faintly sweet is coolant. Blue or grey smoke, or an oily smell, is a different and more serious problem.
If the level is simply low and you find no obvious leak, topping up with the correct coolant — or clean water in a genuine emergency — may get you home. Add it slowly, with the engine off and cool, and watch for it running straight back out onto the ground.
When to stop driving and call for a flatbed
Some symptoms mean the engine should not run again until someone has looked at it. Call for a tow rather than trying to nurse it home if you see any of these:
- The temperature warning returns within a few minutes of setting off again.
- The coolant level drops noticeably each time you top it up — you are pouring it onto the road, or worse, into a cylinder.
- White smoke from the exhaust that does not clear, or a sweet smell from the tailpipe. That is coolant burning in the combustion chamber.
- The oil dipstick shows a milky, coffee-coloured emulsion.
- The engine ran hot for more than a minute or two, or it lost power, ran roughly or made knocking noises while hot.
The economics here are lopsided. A tow costs a fraction of a head gasket job, and a warped cylinder head is what you get for driving another ten miles on an overheated engine. When in doubt, put it on the truck.
Ten minutes of prevention
Overheating in traffic is nearly always something that could have been caught in the drive. Before a hot spell or a long trip, check the coolant level cold and top it up with the right specification for your car — mixing incompatible coolants causes its own problems. Squeeze the radiator hoses: they should be firm and springy, not soft, swollen or rock hard. Look through the front of the radiator and condenser for leaves, plastic bags and insects blocking the airflow, and clear them out. With the engine warm and idling, confirm the radiator fan actually cuts in. And carry a couple of litres of pre-mixed coolant in the boot — it is the cheapest breakdown insurance you can buy.
